I have a private network made up of a Win2K Pro and a Win
XP Pro workstations here at home using the 192.168.0.0.
These machines are hidden behind a DLink DI-804 ADSL
firewall/router which is NAT enabled.

The remote site has a firewall which is connected to the
net via ADSL (with a static address) and I can
successfully connect to the firewall and then pass through
to the server (using Remote Desktop client) from my Win2K
workstation when using a modem dial-up connection with a
PPTP VPN config. I have enabled port 1723 for both in-
bound and out-bound traffic on the D-Link 804 and I have
tried to configure a PPTP VPN connection using
the "Connect to a Private Network using the Internet"
wizzard use the firewall (ie use my ethernet port) on the
Win2K without success. Can this be done and if so what
have I missed (probably something very obvious) ??

Note - If I connect the Win2K direct to the ADSL modem and
start the ISP's own software as it configures itself as a
modem - It's just the private network.

Thanking you in advance ...

Anthony

If you can connect to your remote site using dial-up (DUN)
and a PPTP/VPN then we know the remote is probably OK.
Have you asked to see if you ISP requires MAC address
registration ?

In the UK, my ADSL ISP called Telewest requires that the
MAC address (aka the hardware address of your network
card) is registered with them so only registered computer
can send/receive. If you had bought, say, a new LinkSys
802.11g Cable/Modem (ADSL modem) it can clone the
rregistered computers MAC address (IP will still change
under DHCP rules). I can then still have 4 connected PC's
using this device which in effect NAT's you MAC address.

Most ADSL routers don;t clone MAC's, so if you ISP
requires your MAC address registred, get a refund a buy a
LnkSys (cheap and easy to use)

Hope that sheds more light on your issue.

Tim

I have checked with the ISP and they don't require a
registered MAC address. The problem is how do I configure
the W2K workstation to use it's ethernet port for the
PPTP/VPN and gain access to the remote site through the
firewall rather than having to use a DUN connection.
