i have two computers running xp home connected to a linksys cable router w/4 port switch to a broadband modem. one pc is fine the other is driving me crazy. i leave it on 24/7. i can use internet explorer with no problems for a day or even sometimes a couple of days but eventually when i open the browser i cannot access the internet. i look everywhere for a problem but the only thing i can find is when trying to repair internet connection it reports a failure bevcause it could not obtain an ip address. everything is set forit to obtain this automatically. if i restart everything works fine for a day or two.
thanx for any help in advance mike

hi mike,

To fix the connection time out you should change the static ip address to a manual ip address on a computer running Windows XP.

Note: Before you make any changes to your TCP/IP settings, write the current ip address, subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS down.

Open Network Connections.
Right-click the network card you want to change, and then click Properties.
On the Networking tab, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
Click Properties to open the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog box.
setting up to use a manual address, click Use the following IP address and type the necessary information.

happy tweak!

thanx tom ,
i did what you suggested and i have my fingers crossed. i also noticed something i didn't before, the date on the lease and when it expires. thats probably what was happening.
thanx again, mike
