Settings related to change password

Hi,
I'm in a single win2003 domain..
At this time no domain password policy defined, I'd like to change the
maximun password age (to 30 days), what happens when I apply this setting ?
When users will be required to change their password ?

If their password is over 30 days old they will be forced to change it at the
next logon.
If the password is less than 30 days old they will be prompted once it
reaches the limit.
