I just reformatted my computer (again) with XP Pro. I also installed Norton
System Works and Firewall 2005. It is running fine for the most part but I
have found 2 exceptions. When I went to http://chi.speakeasy.net/ to check
my speed all I get is the little white box with the red "x" in it. I found
the samething happened when I went to a Java (I assume) newspaper crossword
puzzle. Is there a setting I need to adjust?

Thanks

You may need to download and install the Java runtime. You probably had it
on your machine before. You can get it from Sun's website.

Is your firewall blocking java or scripts? add that site to your
"exceptions" or "trusted sites" list in the firewall. else you need to
allow java applets to run.

Turn on the WinXP firewall, turn off all Norton programs and try again.

Have you re-installed Java?

As the result of a lawsuit by Sun Microsystems, and the ensuing
settlement, Microsoft was not allowed to provide its own Java Virtual
Machine to Windows XP users. You can get almost the same
functionality by downloading Sun's version of Java from
http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html. If you want the wider website
compatibility of Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine, it is still
available from a lot of 3rd-party web sites, one of which is here:
http://www.virtualmachine.tk/.

If you do choose the Microsoft JVM, be sure to apply a needed
security patch.
