I'd like to save my Windows settings to my thumb drive, so I can load
them up when I work on the computers in the school's lab. Is that
possible?

Go to Start -> Help and Support and search for "Files and
Settings Transfer Wizard".
You should be able to save your settings to the USB drive. You
might also want to take a look here:

Better make sure you're not violating any
school IT policy first.

And if the IT dept. knows what it's doing, it
will have measures in place to prevent you from
doing what you are trying to do. It would be
an adminstrative headache deluxe if any user
were allowed to bypass network security and dump
settings (and possibly virus/malware/etc.)
onto a workstation at any ol' time.
