Settings keep changing...

Well... just one...

Gateway 400C... Windows 98se... IE 6.0.2800.1106

Every now and then (haven't figured out a pattern) I bring up IE and it
appears to not be able to find my start page, or any other page for that
matter. I go into Tools > Internet Options > Connections > Settings:
Normally Automatically detect settings is checked... but when the above
error appears, Use a proxy server... is checked. Reversing this fixes the
problem. Why does this happen, and how can I prevent it from happening in
the future? Thanx.
