Setting Worksheet Defaults/Template

Thank you for reviewing my question!

We have a user who wants Excel to open new worksheets
with certain settings, similar to setting document
defaults in Word. According to the knowledge base
recommendation, we created the template and placed it in
the designated file, however, even upon restart, Excel
does not open the template as the new worksheet. How can
we get Excel to open new documents with this template so
that the user can avoid having to re-create the settings
every time she opens Excel? Surely there is a way to set
document defaults that include layout, margins, and other
formatting? This user is running Excel 9 (2000).

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

Open a new workbook. Customize as you wish. File>Save As Type: scroll down
to Excel Template(*.XLT) and select. Name your workbook "BOOK"(no quotes).
Excel will add the .XLT to save as BOOK.XLT.

Store this workbook in the XLSTART folder usually located at........

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART

This will be the default workbook for File>New>Workbook.

You can also open a new workbook and delete all but one sheet. Customize as
you wish then save this as SHEET.XLT in XLSTART folder also. It now becomes
the default Insert>Sheet.

More can be found on this in Help under "templates"(no quotes).

Thanks so much for the response!

I'm in a bit of a quandry, however, as we have already
taken the steps you've outlined. We placed the template
in two places:

C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates

and

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\XLStart

and yet, when a new worksheet is opened, the template
with the default is not the one that opens. The user has
to manually open the template. Any other suggestions of
things we can check?

Thanks so much-
Amanda

The Templates folder requires the user to select.

The Office\XLSTART folder is not correct folder. You will find several
XLSTART folders.

Try this path......works for me. I have my BOOK.XLT and SHEET.XLT stored
there.

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application\Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART
