Setting up wireless... General procedure?

Folks,

Apologies if this is the wrong place to post this?

I'm generally ok with most pc stuff, both software and hardware, but wireless is a mystery/black art to me...

I'm going to help a mate in a couple of days, to try and get his newish Asus laptop working wirelessly with his wireless router...

I was over there a while back and managed to get it working via ethernet cable, but not wirelessly.

The PC could see a good signal, but we couldn't make a connection...

I gave up because I do shiftwork, and it was after a long shift, and I was getting tired, hence the repeat visit in a coupel of days...

I realise that basically it's to do with the PC and router recognising the same encryption key, but I think I got into a bit of a chicken and egg situation. I'm intending to start from scratch when there next time...

Can anyone advise, or point me to a site that demonstrates, the basic steps I should be doing to get this going? Specifically, which action comes first... setting the encrytion on the PC or the router.

Thanks in anticipation, (and apologies... I now have to log off for an hour or so!)

Regards,

Simsy

You set up the encryption on the router first via cable, then make a note of the key and then input that into the Laptop.

First off I would have no encryption set and connect the Laptop wirelessly as a test, then go on to setup encryption.

Most makes of router have support sections with FAQ's for setting it up - try their websites :thumb:

Yeh i do the same as Ady. Setup everything connected via cable, then get 1 comp to connect via wireless and setup the encryption via the cable connected comp. Then i quickly dash round and setup everything on the wireless cilents and test so see if everything is ok, then i remove the cable connection ( as all my comps are wireless) and setup the wireless connection on that comp.

What router do you have and what wireless hardware is in the comp?

Hiya Steve - haven't seen you around for a while

...have to admit to not visiting your place for a while too :o

lol, yeh i know, i formated my comp and lost my bookmarks, saw a link from a google search and thought id come and have look. Feel free to pop over to CPCFF whenever. Had a few changes (1 major one, the founder was killed in a car crash last year, its been hard to adjust as he was such a good bloke)

Soz for going Off Topic.

Can't login with my old username Steve - appears I may have been deleted

Thanks folks...

I'll see how I get on tomorrow and post back.

It's an ASUS laptop, with built in wireless gubbins... I'm not sure off the top of my head but I think the modem/router is a Phillips. (It was supplied by the isp, TalkTalk)

I was thinking that I should use the ASUS software on the comp first as it can create an encryption key... I don't think the router had that facility... I'll look at it tomorrow with a clearer head than before!

Thanks for the interest,

Well... I eventually got it working. I had to re-install the ASUS wireless software and followed the advice from the bloke on the ASUS helpline... It still wasn't without hitches... but the main thing is that it's now working, and encrypted.

Thanks for your interest folks.
