setting up vpn

We just converted our broadband service to static IPs and I want to set up a
VPN link so two or three can work from home. The difficulty I am having is
that we have two routers. The first, provided by the cable company, contains
(hosts) the 5 static IP addresses. This then connects to a Belkin router
(with standard addresses) which then feeds into the switch. The static IPs
range from 123.345.789.234 to 123.456.789.238. Currently, I have left the
standard setup on the Belkin and each station gets its address automatically.
The confusion (to me) is should I change the range of addresses in the Belkin
to reflect the presence of the static addresses and/or should I manually
assign addresses from the 192.168,0,2 .. 100 range. I have looked in several
places and can't find an answer to this. Once this is settled, there is good
documentation to set up the VPN connection on the main office machine. We are
running a peer2peer internally altho we have one machine acting as a server.
All machines are running XP Pro. Hope someone can steer me in the right
direction

Do you have Windows Server 200X?
If yes, You can configure Routeing and Reomote Access or RAS, (Remote Access
Service) use Port 1723 (PPTP)
If not
Easy way is using PPTP server.
I use Linksys RV042 has PPTP Server build on. I am not sure Belkin has PPTP
server build on to Router.
It might be just pass through feature.
End user does not need addtional software, Use Windows XP connection Wizard
to setup vpn connection.
You only need one static IP to do this,
Is this help?

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes this helps. Since I am not running Windows
Server anywhere (and maybe I should be) I will use the PPTP server if the
Belkin has it available. The other part of my question is still open though..
Do I need to change the LAN settings on the Belkin router. From some of the
other psts I have read, there is a reccomendation that the standard
192.168.0.1 may in fact conflict with the LAN settings at the client houses
when they try to access this network. That much is pretty basic to change
(ie:192.168.10.1 .. 100) but what about the subnet. Should that be
255.255.255.248.

I see a lot of these items being referenced but without explanations.

I would use unique IP. Not 192.168.0.XXX 192.168.1.XXX Use higher number.
So, anybody connect PPTP, The IP would not conflict.
What is the model number of your belkin router?

Ex:
For your Router
IP: 192.168.100.1
Sub: 255.255.255.0
GW: 192.168.100.1
DNS: 192.168.100.1
DNS: your ISP DNS

DHCP Enable
Use DHCP setting first then use Static setting for workstation PC.

you know if you have Windows XP Pro, you can create only one VPN connection
using one XP Pro PC.
