Setting up VPN server?

I've read through all the Microsoft articles, but haven't
figured this one out yet:

I'm trying to set up Remote Desktop for use with XP
machines at work (PTP network) and XP machines at home.
To do this I have to set up a VPN server at work, right?
But how do I do that? Microsoft articles only refer to
connecting to a VPN server at work, not
configuring/installing one. We connect to the internet
with DSL and a router (dynamic IP).

Thanks!

Jonas

You don't necessarily need to setup a VPN to connect via Remote Desktop. You
should be able to make a Remote Desktop connection directly as long as your
router/firewall allows TCP port 3389 traffic.

Hey Mark,
Does Remote Desktop Connection thru a VPN "add" any additional security?
I know they are both 128 encrypted and that is fair, just wondering as
I've been able to setup RDC thru VPNs but "TODAY" I ran into some snag
and I'm still trying to figure it out... but IF there is NO benefit to
running the RDC thru VPN (well, I will need it as I'm going to do
multiples) but... well, you get the idea?

Other than the fact it is double encrypted, which may or may not have
security connotations (see cryptology references for the effects of
multiple encryptions).

The key benefit is that you can reduce the profile you make available
on the internet.. If you have multiple computers on the private LAN,
you can open one VPN port to the internet to allow access to these
machines in lieu of opening and forwarding multiple ports to the
various computers.
