I want to enable scavenging on my win2k AD integrated DNS
domain..... my question, Because dns is integrated in AD,
do i have to go to each DC and enable scavenging?, or can
i just go to one of the DC's and enable it, and changes
will be replicated to the other DC's?

thanks

Hi Rob,

The aging and scavenging can be performed on a per-server, per-zone or
per-record basis according to an algorithm.

Parameters for configuring/controlling aging and scavenging:
==========
On Per-Zone: 1. No-refresh interval
2. Refresh Interval
3. Enable Scavanging
4. ScavengingServers
5. Start scavenging
On per-server: 1.Default no-refresh interval (by default, 7 days)
2. Default Refresh Interval (by default, 7 days)
3. Default Enable Scavenging (by default,
scavenging is
disabled)
4. Enable Scavenging (by default, scavenging is
disabled)
5. Scavenging Period (by default, 7 days)
Per record: timestamp
Record Timestamp is written at the time the record is created or refreshed
either
on a AD-integrated zone or a standard Primary zone for which scavenging is
enabled.

The value of timestamp is the time when the record is created or refreshed.

If a record is created by a method other than dynamic update, its timestamp
value
is set to ZERO which means the timestamp must NOT be refreshed and the
record must
NOT be scavenged.

If the record is updated or refreshed, the timestamp is changed to the
current
time.

Server can scavenge records thst weren't refreshed during refresh interval
which
comes after non-refresh interval. It scavenge thru all records and all
PRIMARY zones one by one.

So, whether we need to enable the scavenging depends on which mode you want
to use.
