setting up remote desktop

Russell, first your home computer will need to be running WinXP Pro as WinXp
Home can't be connected TO via Remote Desktop Connection. However, you can
connect FROM several Win OS and I think Mac OSX.

If you are running Win XP Pro at home, right click on My Computer select
Properties from the menu then the Remote tab and make sure the "Allow users
to connect remotely to this comptuer" is checked. Then click the "Select
Remote Users" button and add your user account. The account will have to
have a password, make sure it is a good one.

Then from work run Remote Desktop Connection and put in your home computer's
IP address in the Compter name box and click connect. If you are lucky that
will bring up a log on dialog for your home system.

I say if you are lucky because depending on your set up at work (firewalls
and such) you may or may not be able to make the connection. Additionally,
if you have a router or firewall installed at home make sure your
forward/open port 3389 to the right computer.

Hope that helps. If not, feel free to copy any additional posts to my
e-mail.

Pat, if you have a router you will need to forward port 3389 in order for
the computer connecting to the host system to be able to get through the
router and communicate with the host. How you forward the port will depend
on which router you are using. If you have a firewall you will need to open
port 3389 again so the the computer connecting to the host system to be able
to get through the firewall. How you open the port will depend on the
firewall you are using.

If you can't figure out how to forward/open your ports on your system, let
me know which router/firewall you are using I may be able to help or someone
else might be familar with your set up.

I am posting this to the newsgroup as well (with your e-mail and numbers
removed) so you can reply there and if I am not familiar with your set up
someone else can help.

Hope that helps.
