I'm trying to set up a newgroup and I cannot get it to connect. I got the
server information from earthlink but it doesn't work. What might I be doing
wrong?

Are you connected to earthlink?

Most ISP's require a username and password for NNTP (newsgroup) access.
Go back to Earthlink's NNTP setup instructions and look again to see
what you've left out or entered incorrectly. For instance, my ISP's news
server requires using the master user account name with domain and is
not the way I connect to read webmail there.

What happens when you try, because my crystal ball is in for servicing.

Do you get any error messages, if so please post them in their entirety

Thank you for thinking throught my problem and giving me some good things to
look for. I think I'll go back to earthlink and check for other problems.

Blown away mate!?

The complete reply is:
Unable to connect to the server.
Configuration:
Account: Earthlink News Server
Server: news.west.earthlink.net
Protocol: NNTP
Port: 119
Secure(SSL): 0
Code: 800ccc0e

I don't see anything wrong. In the username field, are you putting your
complete email address? Which antivirus and firewall are you running?
Any possibility that either of the latter two are blocking port 119?

Don't feel alone. I've been trying to open a newsgroup(currently using
att.net) and get the same error message. Years ago my ISP was
worldnet.att.net but now they have dropped the worldnet part. (I've tried
both!)

"att.net" is not a proper news server name. What does your ISP say
you should use? Most have that information on a customer support web page.

I am receiving exactly the same error code (i.e 800ccc0e) from any of the
servers (well the half-dozen or so I tried before giving up) listed on
http://www.newsservers.net/FreeNewsServers.php

My ISP does not have their own news server (they did before they were taken
over by Orange!) so I have to look for another one :-(

I don't believe there should be firewall problems because I can connect to
the pre-populated Microsoft Communities news server AND to
news.readfreenews.net.

Does anyone know the meaning of the error code (why doesn't Microsoft
document the errors that actually occur rather tha listing alll the errors
that never seem to happen? ;-) - that would seem to be most useful for
diagnosing the problem - unless it turns out to be another Microsoft

Here is a good free one ( a dying breed)
http://www.motzarella.org/
although it is only suitable for text groups. These days it is likely
you will have to pay a subscription for binary group access.

The code means - Unable to connect to server (thanks Einstein!)
but if you post the whole message from which the code was extracted
we may have a chance of working out why.

Also let us know which Antivirus program you are using
because Windows Mail is notoriously sensitive to some such as
Norton or McAfee.

"snikelfritz" ...
Post any error message a codes for analysis, meanwhile...

Three servers are available for Newsgroups usage: nntp.earthlink.net,
news.west.earthlink.net and news.east.earthlink.net.
For best performance, if you live west of the Mississippi River,
you should use news.west.earthlink.net. If you live east of the
Mississippi River, you should use news.east.earthlink.net.
If you are unsure, you should use news.east.earthlink.net .
All servers will have the same functionality, capability,
list of newsgroups, and articles.

All connections to the news servers require authentication.
You must log in with your entire email address (
e.g. (e-mail address removed)).
Remember, your email address and password are case sensitive.
(Make sure your CAPS LOCK button is off!)

These setting are configured...
Tools > Accounts > news account > Properties > General/Server etc.
