I just purchased a Linksys hub to connect my laptop and desktop to
share the Internet. I have since read that to be able to upload and
download information at the same time I should get a router.

My ISP is Charter (running WinXP Pro) and all I really want to do is
simaltaneously download large files from usenet. Would it still be a
good idea to use a router?

Also does anyone have a link for step-by-step instructions on setting
this type of newtwork up?

Thanks a lot.

An "internet router" would fit the bill. Here's one example from LinkSys:

You can get this particular model at NewEgg for $47:

Your product manual should cover this, but it generally does not involve
much work. This router (and others as well) include a DHCP server, so
you just have to tell your PCs to use DHCP, and the rest happens
automagically.

Thanks grinder, that's good info.

The router is the best alternative, but you could also use
WIndows' ICS, presuming you'd have the desktop always turned
on when using the laptop, as the desktop would be the
preferred gateway (ICS host) system.

On the other hand, I'd not only get a router but a wifi
router so you can use a wireless card in the laptop. Wifi
routers are now barely (if any) more expensive when caught
on sale and the laptop wifi cards can also be had for under
$20 after rebate, perhaps under $10.

Thanks kony. I was considering the wifi direction. I need to look for
a sale first. Thanks for the suggestions.
