Setting up multiple simultaneous users

I'm trying to set up access on a network where multiple users will use the
file at the same time. I've already split the database into the backend (on
the shared) and the front end (which I load onto the users). I'd like to use
the security function to control which individuals can edit. I haven't had
any luck with this.

So far, the security prompts and works from my workstation, but doesn't
prompt for any other workstations. Do I need to join the workgroup on each
individuals workstation? This would make it difficult, because the
individuals are spread apart over hundreds of miles, and I don't want to give
them access to the security.

Sounds like you did not follow all the steps in the security FAQ. If they
can open the file without a password, then your database is NOT secured.

You need to go back and follow ALL the steps.

Yes, each user will need to use the mdw file you designate (which I would
store in the same folder as the backend, if it were me). I would not have
them 'join' it since they would then have to log in for ALL databases, I
would have them open the file using a shortcut that includes the workgroup
file path.

This is a very common question and you could have found the answer if you
had searched.

Sorry, this is my first time setting up the security. So join the workgroup
only with the front end (or back end, or both) on the shared, then put
shortcuts on everyone's desktop?

Read the security FAQ from start to finish several times and follow ALL the
steps. Your database is not currently secured.

It is the **Access session** that's associated with a workgroup, not
any particular database. So asking whether it's the frontend or the
backend to join to the workgroup is somewhat meaningless. It's a
subtle, but important distinction. For best results, you would
typically manage both the frontend and backend using the same
workgroup file (although not strictly necessary!!).

In direct answer to your question -- yes -- put a shortcut on each
user's desktop. And since your users are widespread (not on a single
LAN), they will also each need a copy of the MDW file. Hopefully your
security is based on **groups** rather than **users** because a
widespread situation like yours will be very difficult to maintain
based on users.

See the website in my signature for some additional information about
security. Hopefully one of the resources will help you better
understand how to configure securtiy. It's not easy at first...

Good luck.
