I have spent over 3 hrs in total over the phone with
dfferent people from Microsoft with no succses trying to
get my microphone working. When I do a sound hardware
check I keep getting an error message with the error code
0x80004005, this error is occurs even if the mike is not
pluged in. I have used the mike on other computers and it
has worked fine. I am using Microsoft XP home addtion and
Microsoft office professional. Any thoughts?

A quick search on the net pointed out that this error code
is common to several problems all related to accessing
files that are either missing or protected.

I'm sure that MS pointed this out to you so it should be
no surprise ;-)

As for possible solutions, double check that your account
has administrator privileges.

Another technique that has saved me many times is to
delete the sound hardware (or uninstall the software) from
the config and then reboot... XP will detect the new
hardware and re-install the drivers and in the process
clean up any corruption that may have taken place.

Use Windows Update to see if any updated drivers are
availalable.

Reinstall drivers.

Good Luck...
