setting up microphone

I have XP Home edition on a custom built computer. I read on Microsoft's site that in order to get the mic to work you need SRE software and that you could get it in one of three ways-from Office 2002, XP Plus or the experimental version MS has out with no support for (but it's free). I opted for XP Plus. After installing it I still seem to not have any SRE software files. The "Speech" folders in Control Panel do not display any of the required tabs to turn it on. I don't seem to be any further ahead than I was before. I also seem to have lost most of the optional background themes that XP previously had available to choose from. Only two options now plus the new ones from XP Plus. Any ideas would be welcome. Thanks

XP Plus adds voice command for Windows Media Player. Office XP+ adds voice
command for Office. What is it that you are trying to achieve? You may need
to get a third party app, if you want to control your entire computer using
voice alone.

Thanks for the reply. I am trying to use voice for Instant Messageing in Windows Messenger. An article on the website by Mr. Markowitz indicated that Plus would give me SRE capability, but, I can't seem to figure out where Plus added anything new to the "Speech" file in Control Panel. Only one tab in that file to pick from and it isn't for SRE. I was able to go to some setup windows and prove the mic is working since I can hear myself speaking in my speakers during the test. Thanks for any help you can provide.
