I have XP Home edition on a custom built computer. I read on Microsoft's site that in order to get the mic to work you need SRE software and that you could get it in one of three ways-from Office 2002, XP Plus or the experimental version MS has out with no support for (but it's free). I opted for XP Plus. After installing it I still seem to not have any SRE software files. The "Speech" folders in Control Panel do not display any of the required tabs to turn it on. I don't seem to be any further ahead than I was before. I also seem to have lost most of the optional background themes that XP previously had available to choose from. Only two options now plus the new ones from XP Plus. Any ideas would be welcome. Thank

ok i seem to run into difficluties using my mic after a fresh install.
recently i figured out what was causing it, first question do you hav
a 6 channel sound card, if yes are you using all six channels(5.
speaker set-up) in no to the speakers make sure you sound card is no
set to use 6 channel set it to 2 it frees up the "mic in" jack thu
enabling the mic.

i use team speak when i play games online and seems like every tim
i've had to reinstall windows, it(mic) doesn't work this last time
noticed and remembered it the sound card was set to 6 channel whic
alters the jacks and uses mic in and sound in as output instead.

so check that, you may not even need XP Plus
also make sure the mic is not muted in the advanced volume settings
and not to insult your intelligence make sure it is plugged into th
right jack(my brother has done it multiple times on here, and happen t
notice it isn't working right and i have to fix it)

Most mother boards come with sound software. The type depends on the chipset you have. Or you may have a soundcard with it's own software and drivers. In my case I have Via AC '97 Audio(wave) If you want to know what you have then go into the voice tab found in Sounds and Audio Devices in your control panel. There you will find a test and setup wizard that will setup your playback as well as voice recording. You can also check many settings of this type by going>start\run and type in dxdiag and then click your way around the tabs to look for what you want. Good luck.

Microsoft XP "Sound Recorder" is sndrec32.exe, a whole 122 kbs, should be in
yr C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 directory. It's pretty basic. In common with most
folk, it seems, I've had probs with mike recordings. It is important to
enable your Sound Card settings (double-click the MIXER, make sure you are
mike-enabled there, the volume is set, and mike boost set, if that feature
is available on your sound card) Also, worth while checking for updated
driver, first.

A better prog is "Total Recorder" which has far greater features - it will
cost you US$15 or thereabouts. Excellent value ! Google will find it for you
(there a free demo).
