Setting up macros for scanning?

We're a small business going (nearly) paperless. We recently purchased
three HP 8270's for our data entry positions, but are having some
issues with speed. I'm looking for some software that would allow me
to have our ERP software feed out a "work order" number (for the name),
and the scanning specs to a command line, all in a single macro click.
I can script our ERP stuff, but are there any scanning solutions that
can do command lines on the cheap? Everything I've found is about $500
bucks per scanner (namely: captiva). We'll have multiple "macros" per
work order for different papers as well (ex: 1055_receipt.jpg,
1055_warrantyform.jpg, etc). Let me know if anyone has done this
before! I'm looking for minimal user input, and high speed (data entry
is a production bottleneck already).

Any response is much appreciated

Hi Josh,

I personally haven't used this software, but I remember another
person's thread in this group which described a similar request for
command line scanning:

have you looked into an rules-based application which automatically
processes registered forms and recognition, extracts data, indexes, and
validates content like Kofax's Ascent Capture 7.5? The good thing about
Ascent Capture is that it's scalable, integrates with your current ERP
Solution by release scripts, and essentially converts your imaging into
a business enabling process. Although you may spend more on the initial
purchase, the ROI is far greater because of the reduced operator
errors, increased speed from capture to release of validated data to
your backend ERP, and scalability to add on modules as your company's
needs grow while still maintaining the same solid ImageControls /
Ascent Capture infrastructure. Batch Seperation is available using
Kofax's AIPE enhanced barcode recognition, as well as form recognition/
processing to drastically increase your buisness processing from the
point of capture to the conversion of usable buisness data.

Just a thought...

Hope this helps~

Sadly, only the HP scanjets are supported, or I'd suggest you hang 'em all
off a linux server and make it pretend to be a windows networking member.
Next time you buy a scanner, you can see if it's supported in linux by going
to http://www.sane-project.org/sane-supported-devices.html and clicking
on the manufacturer's name. You can download the latest sane-backends
source code there, too. Hmm, makes that 200 or 500 buck-per-scanner
windows command-line scanning software look less horrible already...
