Setting up Hyperlink causes shutdown

I've recently switched to Vista and am using FrontPage 2003 with it. When I
try to set up a hyperlink, FrontPage shuts down. Any idea what might be
causing this or how I can fix it?

This is a known bug, with currently no fix.

It's a bug, and MS says they are working on a fix. You need to manually
insert the hyperlink in the meantime.

Have you considered calling MS Product Support, regarding this issue?

Tom, I see that this bug has still not been fixed despite being reported
more than 3 months ago. I hear you MVPs saying that MS is working on a fix
but sadly, now I don't believe it for several reasons.

First, I have yet to find an actual MS engineer/technician (not the MVPs)
say that they are working on it. Do you or any other MVP have a link on MS
site that actually acknowledges that this is a genuine problem for many and
they are in fact working on it? Also, do they say how long will it take for
them to fix it?

Second, if they were in fact 'working' on it as the MVPs keep saying, I flat
out refuse to believe it would have taken them this long. If a problem like
this could not be fixed by a giant like Microsoft in 3 months; they might as
well throw in their towel, admit this product will not work under Vista and
ask FP users to switch over to Expression or whatever. But to say that 'they
are working on it' is becoming increasingly difficult to digest.

Because of this problem I went back to XP. When you have to insert hundreds
of links each day (news site), manual coding is simply not an option. If it
was for a day or two or even a week or two; one can manage to code manually
but because of the uncertainty whether MS will ever fix this problem; FP
under Vista (fresh install, not an upgrade) is a waste of time and money.

Nothing against the MVPs; I just wish I hear it straight from the horses
mouth, i.e., an MS employee, as to the status of a fix.

You won't find a MSFT engineer/technician discussing anything Vista in a public news
group.
Just isn't going to happen.

They are working on it but since it's Vista related, a fix isn't likely to appear this
soon, there are simply too many other considerations, items to back test to be able to pop
out an overnight fix that's OS related.

What if the fix for Vista breaks every other OS.

I feel your frustration, but you'll just have to be patient.

Gary,
FrontPage is not the only application that has issues when
being used on Vista, and I am sure there are plenty of MS
programs that are higher up the food chain than FP is when
it comes to scheduling time to fix- especially seeings it is
the last of it's evolution, and is over 4 years old

What I would do, is to try installing VirtualPC on Vista,
and installing XP inside of there. It may not be the best
solution, but it is workable. I have to do it for other
applications, which even though they have been updated,
their latest versions will not work with the files of the
version I have- which was released over 10 years ago. I have
98 going on in VPC just for that application

OK, I took your advice and sent MS an email (phone option was too time
consuming). Here is the gist of their reply (which is what you guys have
been saying for some time so nothing new here but at least it is now
official):

"...If I have understood your issue correctly FrontPage crashes when you try
to do the hyperlink This is a current issue with windows Vista that the
FrontPage hyperlinks do not work on the live server. The only work around
would be to work on the local site. Our engineers are working on this issue
right now and once it is resolved a patch or an update will be released.

And as the development team is still working to get a fix or a patch to
resolve this issue. We do not know how long it will take to develop the fix
or a patch to resolve this issue. But we assure you that an update will be
given on the Microsoft website for you to check, so you can visit the
Microsoft website frequently to check for any updates..."

So there it is...

I appreciate all of your inputs. Nonetheless, as others have said it, it is
very frustrating.

Anyway, I won't bother you guys on this issue anymore.

Add me to the apparently long list of frustrated users who are "new to Vista,
long-time Frontpage admins that can't work right now". I notice most of the
traffic on this problem seems to have stopped a few days ago. Has it been
fixed and I missed it?

TH

No, it has not been fixed. We still haven't been given a time-frame as to
when it will be.

I am having the same exact problem but I am running Windows Xp Pro
with FP 2003! This is not isolated to Vista! It does it on my wifes
computer too.

Just for the record, I went out and bought a brand new HP laptop with Vista
HP and then discovered the FP crash problem. I've been a FP user for years
with zero problems on Windows XP and I use that combination to manage a very
large website. I thought it was just me until I read the posts with others
having the same FP crash issue. Needless to say, I'm pretty frustrated --
Microsoft basically dumped FP customers by moving to Expression Web, left FP
users in the lurch because FP 'bots don't work with Expression Web and now FP
doesn't even work with Vista. Very nice way to treat and keep customers!
Zig.
