Hi,

I'm running SpyBot and it needs a proxy connection to
downbload its updates. They have included a turtorial on
the subject, but I am at a total loss in understanding
what this process is. Can anyone give me a step by step
(with definitions) 'idiot's guide' to setting up a proxy
server?

Thanks in advance,
Terry

It doesn't *need* it, does it? it's just asking you where your proxy is
*if* you have one, right?

Can you ignore this config? If you do have a proxy, see it in IE (Menu:
Tools/Internet Options: Tab: Connections, Button: Lan Settings.

Hi Rob,

Well, it won't update without the configuration. Here's
what SpyBot FAQ says:

(Begin)The integrated update is not working. Are there
any solutions for this? FAQ #010

The main reason for this problem is that you need to use
a proxy server to access the internet. In that case, the
proxy server is already set up in your browser, where you
can look up it's settings and enter them into Spybot-S&D.

In Mozilla, you can find the Proxy settings if you open
the Edit menu, choose Settings... at the bottom, and
navigate to the section Advanced - Proxies.
In Internet Explorer, see the Menu Extras - Internet
options, go to the tab Connections and click the Settings
button at the bottom.

Back inside Spybot-S&D you need to go to the settings
page, and scroll down to the entry Automation - Web
update - Use proxy. Now check the box below it, and a
dialog will appear where you can enter your proxy
settings.
The format is host:port (the host is the name, the port
the number you found in your browser). If you need to
access your proxy using a login, you can use the format
username:password@host:port. (END)

It's Greek to me...I mean I can find the boxes in IE6 and
in SpyBot, but I'm at a loss as to what information
should go into them.

Wait a minute...maybe all it's saying is that IF I
require a proxy server, this is what I need to do to
configure it. Since I don't currently use a proxy server
this all may be unnecessary.

Oh...

Yeah, I what you're saying (some days are better than
others).

Thanks for the follow-up.
Best regards,
Terry

Now thats a product I would really use.

It should not rely on a proxy to exist in your home network. If your using
AOL, then thats a different story since you are really connecting to the
internet via a proxy (aka: you dial into AOL your in a walled garden)
