We have one of our AD servers which serves as our file
and print server also. We have purchased a new server
and need to transition. Can anyone recommend the best
way to move file shares, permissions, printer shares, AD
roles?

thanks,

James

Hi James

For FSMO roles, you'd promote the new server in and transfer the roles:

Printers ... printmig.exe:

File shares:

Probably take a backup of just the data you want and restore to the new
machine. Can't think of a tool off the top of my head. Another alternative
might be to set up a DFS root that points to your shares and introduce the
new server as a link target. Allow it all to replicate and then remove DFS
but leave the share intact. Not really very elegant.

Kind regards
