All,

If there are networking guru's out there, please advise:

I have 4 machines hardwired to a Linksys router. 3 have XP Home and 1
has XP Pro. How can I enable file and print sharing between these
machines? I have run the network wizard (using MSHOME as the
workgroup) but the machines still can't see each other. What am I
doing wrong? Thanks.

Running the Wizard should be all that's needled, provided that you
give it the right answer when it asks how your computer connects to
the Internet.

The Wizard calls your router a "residential gateway". If you
incorrectly tell it that your computer connects "directly or through a
network hub", it will enable XP's Internet Connection Firewall, which
blocks file sharing.

If that doesn't solve the problem, I've written a web site that should
help you get everything working:

Windows XP Network Troubleshooting
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/troubleshoot

Please pay particular attention to these sections:

1. Firewalls: Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection
Firewall on local area network connections -- it's for use only on a
direct modem connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all
other firewalls while troubleshooting.

2. Protocols: Use only one for File and Printer Sharing. If the
network needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing
from all but one of them.

3. NetBIOS over TCP/IP: Make sure that it's enabled on all computers.

Thanks for the reply Steve. That is exactly what I was telling the
Network Wizard, that I connect directly. So just for clarification, I
should select the residential gateway option?

You're welcome. Yes, select the residential gateway option.
