Is there a list of things I should check before / during / after I set
up a DC on a newly installed Windows 2000 server?

This will become the primary DC of a small office. I want to make sure
it goes smoothly. I've installed AD before but to be honest after some
of the issues I've had in the past I"m starting to doubt myself on
these installs.

Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

Setup DHCP, DNS befor you run DCPromo.
get this working first,
I would set up the file share's pre DFS, thats just me
then use DFS to let users at the shares.
Use DcDiag /v from the support tools

What didn't go smoothly befor ?

What didn't go smoothly befor ?

I have had many DNS issues (partly because the original setup was on a
LAN with a DHCP server and no other DC's (workgroups) but the old LAN
admin told me that we should use the ISP's DNS servers.)

Ever since I did the install at this location they have had NOTHING
but problems witht he server hanging almost daily now! I built another
box as an interim file server while I bring the old box back for a
complete overhaul (extensive hardware tests show all the hardware to
be working fine.) It has been a real mess (and time vacuum) trying to
troubleshoot this server. I ran NetDiag /FIX and dcDiag /FIX which did
correct the DNS issues (after I installed and properly configured DNS
of course) but still have errors on this old server (1 year old with
good hardware.)

Since DHCP exists on the LAN from another box I cannot configure that
on this server but I will set up the DNS services before I run
DCPromo. In the past I just let the AD wizard do all that work for me.
