Setting time on Laptop

On my old'ish laptop when i try to set the time as soon as i correct it the clock it stops working?
I come out of it by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Delete it states 'not responding'
Is this the start of a bigger problem or just a slight glitch.
O/S is Windows 98SE.

If you set it in the BIOS before windows starts, does it remember it ok?

Ooopps have not tried that yet.

Will have a go at that on Monday when i'm home next.
