I have a "finished" document that contains several columns of information. The columns look like a dog's hind leg. How can I set tabs that will apply to the entire document and will even up the columns?

Edit > Select All
Click the "hinkydink" to the left of the horizontal ruler (should look like
a heavy black L) until the type of tab you want is selected (see below).
Click in the ruler where you want the tab to be (you can drag it to another
location if you "miss")
Text should jump to where you want it
*Heavy Black L = Left aligned tab
Upside down T = centered tab
Backwards heavy Black L = Right aligned tab
Upside down T with a dot = decimal centered tab
Heavy Vertical Line = Bar tab (no, not for your cold liquor drinks!)

Use Table > Convert Text to Table and let table columns do the work for you.

Before doing anything with the ruler, you need to select the existing text
you want the tab settings to apply to. Be aware, though, that if multiple
tab characters have been used, you'll probably just make the situation
worse, and if the alignment was created with spaces... <shudder> You can
remove extra tab characters by replacing ^t^t with ^t till Word reports 0
replacements. For more, see
