Setting reminders in outlook

When I try to set a appointment in the calander and and have it remind me it
pops up "The reminder will not appear because the item is not in your
calander or task folder"

Your Outlook version is?
When I try to set a appointment in the calander....

Is this Calendar in your "Personal Folders" or is it an additional Calendar
or a "Public Calendar"?

Reminders only work in "Personal Folders" not in "Public Folders". Also
Outlook versions till 2003 does not support reminders in additional folders
or subfolders of your "Personal Folders"

Then you will need 3rd party solutions like:

http://www.slipstick.com/addins/calendar_reminder.asp
