pI need help in making photoshop my default image program. Currently when I
downloaded images to XP it will automatically open them in Paint. I am also
experiencing problems opening the Paint files in Photoshop. I currently have
to download images> copy files to desktop >Open Photoshop and Open or Browse
from PS. I am unable to open using OPen With by clicking on the image either
in the folder or on desktop . Images will only open with Paint I am offered
Recommended Applications of which PS is not one of them. When I browse and
select Photoshop it reverts back to the screen showing other apps and will
not open PS. Thank you

Does Photoshop work correctly? If yes, start the program and from its
Preferences set what file types will be associated with it.

The only file type that Photoshop is associated with by default are PSDs.
If your images are opening in MSPaint then this would suggest that they are
BMPs
To change the association, right click on Start>Explore>Tools>Folder
Options>File Types.
Select your file type from the list and click on Change and then Browse to
find Photoshop.

Right click on the Start "button" with your mouse, you will see Tools on the
menu bar. What are you going to do with Photoshop? If you are just using it
as an image viewer, it is a very expensive one and one which "hammers" the
average PC when in use. It is a bit like using a racehorse to pull a milk
cart. If you want to open images to work on them, why not just go to
File>Open in Photoshop and change the file type via the drop down box.

I haven't been very clear, my apologies. I use PS for work..you are correct I
do not need it as just an image viewer but I cannot get Paint files to open
after download ...ps wont recognize them...I have tried Open With but
somewhere I need to set preferences to allow the Paint files to open..I am a
Mac user and feel adrift.thnks

What file format are the Paint files? When Paint opens the file try doing a
"save as" and select JPG and see if you can open this via PS.
Cannot open files after downolad? Where are you downloading them from?
You should be able to open any image format from within PS by going to
File>Open and selecting the "files of type" dropdown menu.
If you are familiar with PS on a Mac it should be almost identical in
operation to the PC version Only difference is the name of the keys,
Control=Command, Alt=Option etc.,

dogsnack,
Right click the image file that you download, such as "download.jpg"> Select
Open With...> There should be a listing of programs that you can open the file
with. If PhotoShop is not listed> Select the BROWSE button> Go To
C:\Programs\PhotoShop and click the application file (*.exe)> The PhotoShop
program should now be on the list> Check the small box in the bottom left corner
of list, "Always use the program....> OK/Apply.

Hi
This is where I get tripped up...PS will not open or show up on the list
after browsing to Adobe>PS and clicking on the application. The screen
reverts back to the Recommended Apps/ Browse window but no PS is listed in
order to "Always use program...". Regards.
