Setting permissions. Remote PC not listed

Hi,

I am running a wireless network in my house, using a broadband router. I
have a PC and a laptop but also have lodgers who can use the network to
access the internet etc. I would like to be able to share my files between
the laptop and PC whilst restricting access for the lodgers. I have turned
off simple sharing and am trying to set permissions for the laptop to view
the files. I have shared the folder, gone to the "share permissions" tap and
then clicked "add" but the only PC listed in the "locations" dialogue is the
local PC.

I am currently running with both the PC and laptop on a workgroup called
"home" but do not have them set to a domain as I am unsure how to go about
doing that. Is there anyway I can get the laptop to appear in the locations
dialogue or am I doing something fundamentaly wrong.

Thanks in advance. Tim

You might try something like the followng. On the computer you are sharing
files with, create a second user account, give it a password, then in the
share security dialog box, add the user from your machine and remove
Everybody. Make sure that the user also has proper NTFS permissions if
needed. Then, from the second machine, do a start->run \\servername\sharename

A dialog box should come up asking you to enter in a username and password.
Enter the user name and password ON THE SERVER that you just created into
this box. You may also have to do something like

servercomputername\username
like

black-box\will

If I remember correctly, by not having the computers as part of a domain
(which would require some sort of domain controler), you cannot share
security principals amongst them but instead must have an account for the
other on each machine.

Let me know if this helps.

Will, thanks very much for the reply but I'm still having a few difficulties.

I have set up the new account and tried the method you suggested but upon
running \\servername\Share I get the message "X is not accesable. You might
not have permission to use this network resource....." I don't get the
username/password box and unless I set the permissions to everyone, I always
get that message (Even if I try to access the share from network places on
the local machine).

Any help would be greatly appreciated, Tim

Hi Will, Still no luck.

Both version are XP SP2 and share and NTFS are both set correctly. I have
the firewall off for filesharing and have tried numerous combinations of
settings. Any more adeas or shoul I just give up now?

Thanks again for your time, Tim

Tim -

I had the same problem because the account I set up on the server did not
have a password. Once I created the password, I could remove Everyone from
the Sharing permissions, give the user account full control and I was able to
connect using the password. I hope this helps.
