Simple question.... My pc can boot from a USB device. So I can assume that If I install an OS to an external hardrive I can boot from that drive.

So can I: Make a 40GB partition for an OS and still use the larger partition for storage like I do now ?? I'm just concerned that when I plug the external into my pc will the OS try to boot, or will it recognise both partitions? Will it see the external as two seperate drives?

Yes. ;)

Rephrase that can you ... you lost me.

if you set the boot priority then yes, but i dint know if that is possible

Sorry didn't mean to confuse. I want to make a partition on my drive and install an OS. I will only use the OS rarely to sort of "rescue" other pcs. But I am currently using the external as a storage device. So I was wondering if installing the OS will cause any problems using it as storage.

Normally when I plug the drive into my pc, I hear the tone, and I see it appear in My Computer as a Hardrive. If I partition it, will I now see two Drives? Is it possible that when I plug the external drive into my USB port, the newly installed OS will try to boot? And If so how can I avoid that?

ah right,

Well I see one problem ... if you use a PC that does not boot from USB you just waisted your time ... learn how to use Knoppix, it will work every time.

However, yes the HD will be seen as two drives and no it will not, should not, boot if just plugged in as an external drive ... :thumb:

Try it, test it out and if not happy then just use it as a backup.

All HDs will fail. :D

Cool :thumb:

I kinda thought most pc's nowadays could boot from USB(well the mobo). Anyways... I'm glad to see that I should not have much trouble. I will intall the OS tonight.

good luck

"I should not have much trouble" ... famous last words. :D

Most MBs today should allow booting from USB ... it is them pesky older ones, the ones you always see on their last legs, you know, they don't even have USB ports ... them are the ones you gotta fix. ;)

Nah... mostly I have to fix the ones that are brand new... owned by people who were heavy Kazaa user with thier old machine with dial up. Ususally I hear "its running soo slow... I've only had it 3 months... whats wrong with it, ***** sucks, I should have gotten a **** " Oh and I love this one... "what do you mean I don't meet the requirements for this game... I have a Gig of ram!!(UH YEAH and a 32mb(shared) onboard e-machine crap video card)

I don't have the heart to respond with... no its not the pc... its your own fault.

I mean the kind of people who's car seize up because they haven't checked their oil in a year. You know the ones that say... "you mean I have to check it and change it? I though it was like gas... you just add more. Or "hey can you tell me where are my spark plugs... and what is a dip stick ?"

If only I knew how to repair Ipods... I'd have a ton of extra cash
