We have 15 new laptops that are loaded with Windows XP with SP2, Office 2003,
IE 6.0, Ad-Aware, Zone Alarm, and lots of other bells and whistles. We are
having problems setting favorites in Internet Explorer. The titles appear,
but therer are no links associated with the titles. We can go to the sites;
we just can't set favorites.

Does anyone have any ideas of what we should do to correct this?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Darlene :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Creating Bookmarks or Favorites

or........

Favorites are missing

Open Registry Editor and navigate to this location:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders]
In the right-pane, double-click "Favorites" and copy the value and post it
here.

The correct value should be: "%USERPROFILE%\Favorites"

or........................

Use FolderRedirector utility and reset the shell folder paths for Favorites
to the default values (both user shell folders and shell folders registry
keys)

Using FolderRedirector utility to redirect special folders in Windows XP:

or...

In XP..there is a local user policy for Favorites, and there is a check box
to delete the Favorites and only use the Favorites provided in the policy.
Check to be sure this setting is not selected.

also.......

Favorites Search, here:

Then type REGSVR32 /i SHDOCVW in RUN box.

Favorites path to defaults.

Is the pushpin in (locked) or out (autohide). Sometimes toggling the setting
works.

Also, deleting these registry keys *may* help:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\window_placement

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Desktop\OldWorkAreas\OldWorkAreaRects

and perhaps.....

Display all the links on the favorites menu
Bookmark Wizard http://www.moonsoftware.com/freeware.asp
AMdead Link http://www.aignes.com/products.htm

If these steps do not resolve your problem, or you need help with the above,
please post back to this thread with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

I forgot to mention that if we try to import the favorites from their old
PCs, the files are there for the favorites, but the web links don't appear.
If I look at the properties of the favorites file on the old PC, there are
three tabs: General, Security, and Web Document. When we look at the
properties of the same file on the new PC, we see everything but the Web
Document tab which is what contains the URL for the site.

Thanks again for all your help and responses.

Hi Darlene :-)

I have just gone through a transfer of files from my W2K to the XP on my
machine, and found that the Import and Transfer Wizard are a bit off. You
might do better to try the following and then copy them to the Favorites
folder in XP. It is what I did, and I have all my files and no problems
with accessing or linking them.
