Setting a LCD monitor beyond its max resolution

Earlier today I managed to set my monitor to 1600X1200 which is beyond
its max of 1280X1024, however it produced a useable 'picture' for some
applications (I could play poker for example, and display 4 full tables)
however now when I set it to that resolution is produce an unusable
(fuzzy) picture.(out of sync?).Earlier it produced a stable display,
although
some of the text was 'missing pixels' but you could still make out what was
meant
to be there. I can't understand why it worked before but not now?

The manufacturer only garuntees stable operation at the maximum resolution
specified.

Maybe but it did work for a while, before it (computer) would not eeeven try
the higher settings. Dunno what happened. I wnat to be able to do it again.

Sometime it will work in spurts, or it may have been a fluke. I have
experienced similar situations on CRT monitors. Maximum doesn't necessarily
mean the maximum possible, just the maximum that will work consistently.
Good luck with it anyway!

THe picture you describe looks like shit, why do you WANT to display
that? Stick with 1280X1024. Especially with a flat screen lcd.

There are only two ways you can display 1600x1200 on an LCD
with native 1280x1024.

1) Have either the video driver or monitor hardware
resample the 1600x1200 down to 1280x1024, so you still have
only 1280x1024 actual resultion viewed on screen.

2) Instead the onscreen image pans, so there's still only
1280x1024 pixels visible at any time but each pixel is a 1:1
representation istead of the lossey resampling down above.

There's no possibly way to actually display 1600 horizontal
pixels onscreen, simultaneously when the monitor only has
1280 pixel elements to use. Same with vertical.

It's adaquate to play poker and display two tables at one with no overlap
could even display 4 tables.

Or just upgrade to a 24" running at 1920X1200 hehe..
a true 20" would have 1600X1200..
17" & 19" only has 1280 lines...

I can do this on my 19 inch 1280X1024 LCD and it is readable but parts of
the screen are hidden and I have to scroll the screen to bring them in
focus.

However they are very expensive comparatively and hard to get hold of
other than via mail order.

Depends on location, and mail order is usually the cheapest
way to get an LCD... at least in the US.

I am not a fisherman but I do live here. I have nothing but respect for the
job the fishermen do but in my mind there are better ways to make a living.
