I want to set the Desktop as the default location for pictures that I
download form the itnernet. How do I do this?

Hi Sam :-)

You don't tell us the versin of Windows you are using, so I can only try to
guess at a solution. Try the following and see if it helps:
To get the download dialog box, enable the "confirm open after download"
option for that file type:

Not Prompted to Specify Download Folder for File
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q177976/

1. Open Windows Explorer
2. Then click [Tools] [Folder Options] [File Types]
3. Scroll down to locate the file type.
4. Highlight the file type (example :"PPT Microsoft PowerPoint
Presentation")
5. Click the "Advanced" button.
6. Enable the option "confirm open after download"

You set this for each file type, e.g. for .zip
Explorer-View-Folder Options-File Types
Find the .zip association (may be WinZip File)
Edit, (or click Advanced on ME or XP) and check the "Confirm open
after download" box

The path to Folder Options may vary according to your operating
system. It may be:
Explorer-View-Folder Options
Explorer-Tools-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Control Panel-Folder options.

Hope this helps.

Thanks.
I am using Windows XP Professional SP2. Are you saying that I need to set
the default folder/location for each file type? Is there not one way to
specifiy that all files downloaded through IE are sent to the desktop?

Hi Sam :-)

Check the information below and see if it helps::

Start>Run>type in Regedit
Navigate to the following Key:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer]

In the right-pane, change the data for [Download Directory] to your existing
download folder
[Enter full path, say E:\Internet\Downloads]

If the entry is not found, create a new String Value [called as REG_SZ]
named Download Directory and set the data accordingly. Quit Registry Editor
and Restart Windows

and........

Change Internet Explorer default Download Directory
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFAQ.htm#Download_dir

also.

[Start] [Run] [Regedit]
Registry Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer
Modify/Create the Value Name [Download Directory] according to the Value
Data listed below.
Data Type: REG_SZ [String Value] // Value Name: Download Directory
Value Data: [Enter Path to Directory to be Assigned as Defualt for
Downloads]
Exit Registry and Reboot

Hope this helps.

One other suggestion that may have been overlooked:

1. Click the hyperlink, and then click Save or "Save this file to disk" in
the File Download dialog box that appears.

2. In the Save As dialog box, specify a location to save the file to (for
example, Desktop), and then click Save.

3. When the download is finished, open the .zip file(example), and then
extract the files that are contained in it.

Hope this helps.
