Set up home network (xp professional and 2000)

Hello,

I'm trying to set up home network. I have one desktop (xp professional)
and 2 laptops (1 xp and the other 2000). I have cable modem and router.
My desktop is wired connection and laptops are wireless connnection. I
follow the network setup wizard on my desktop (xp). It works very well
for my 2 xp machines (1 desktop and 1 laptop). They can see each
other's shared files and printer (printer is connected to desktop).

However, from my desktop, I can see shared files on 2000 box but not
vice versa. When I run \\desktopname from my 2000 box, I got
"\\desktopname is not accessible. There are currently no logon servers
available to service the logon request". Can someone tell me the
missing puzzles? Thanks.

You're probably posting in the wrong newsgroup since your
problem is caused by the WinXP PC, not by the Win2000
machines.

I suspect one of the following:
- Your IP addresses are incompatible.
- Your WinXP firewall is blocking your.
- You may have "Simple File Sharing" enabled.

The experts in the WinXP newsgroup will probably give you
an immediate answer.
 
Okay, I found the cause at least. The laptop (2000 Profeesional) is my
company's property. When I login, it uses the company's default domain.
I changed the domain to the domain name that the same as host name then
it works fine.

Is there anyway to make it works even I use company's default domain?

Nope, there's no way to simply browse to the domain computer and see it.
You can connect to it using either a mapped drive or via network places
using a known account - provide the username and password of an account that
exists on the domain computer when you connect to it from your home
computer - and then you will be able to access it.

This seems to be a change of topic . . .

You can access your WinXP desktop remotely under
the following conditions:
- It must be WinXP Professional.
- It must have a fixed internal IP address.
- Your installation must have a known external IP address.
- You must create a tunnel through your firewall so that packets
for port 3389 are sent to your WinXP PC.

There's no need to set up any kind of network connection to use Remote
Desktop, though if you are using Windows 2000 as the guest you need to
install the Remote Desktop Client software (MSRDPCLI.EXE on the Windows XP
CD if you have it, or Microsoft Downloads to obtain a copy if you don't).
