set up a field where I type a number and text automatically appear

I want to set up a field where I type in a number and corresponding text is
inserted. How would I go about doing that?

Use a combo box on a form. There is a combo box wizard that can help with
this.

It seems that what you may really want is to start typing some text, have it
autofill with the remaining text, but only a number is what's actually
stored. I say this only because it's easier to remember what a word means
than what a list of numeric codes mean.
