On a Windows 2000 Pro laptop, I'd like to be able to set the security on the CD/DVD
player for a restricted user to Read only, NOT Execute.

This way, the restricted user cannot install or run a program from the CD/DVD. (They can
play a DVD, but the DVD can't install anything like Sony likes to do...!)

However, when I right-click the CD/DVD drive in Windows Explorer and select Properties,
there is no Security tab.

Please, how can I set user access for a Restricted user so that they cannot Execute from
the CD/DVD???

Thanks!!!

Bill.

You can do it with a Group Policy setting. Click on Start | Run and
enter: gpedit.msc

Look for "Disable media source for any install" policy (located in User
Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Installer)

Thanks. What is the user scope of this setting - it appears to be global?

With regards to Restricted Users, Power Users, and Administrators, does applying this
setting mean that only administrators can run .EXE programs from removable media? Or is
it a per user setting?
