I have XP installed on my C drive and Vista installed on a different physical
drive namely D. When I boot the PC the default choice is Vista and unless I
am present to select the "earlier version of Windows" option I have to reboot
to get to Vista.
I guess I need to tinker with the Boot.ini file but don't know what to do.
can anybody help please?
TIA

Colin

This is a great program, and their support forum is the best - they worked
with me all day yesterday until I finally got my machine to do what it was
supposed to do - you can make either your default program - and set the time
the ''selection'' screen remains.

The easiest way is to download VistaBootPro from
http://www.vistabootpro.org/intro.php
It can change the boot order, the delay before timeout, and you can edit the
entries for easier recognition. It does a whole lot more. It can do this
from XP or Vista.

VistaBootPro is no longer the "easiest" way to do what OP asks, is it?
Starting with build 5384.4, you can change the default OS and the
default delay from within Vista. The only extra significant
functionality that VistaBootPro now seems to offer is the ability to
change the displayed names of the operating systems that appear on the
multi-boot menu.

Sorry, I'm not in Vista as I type this, but if memory serves, it's
just like in XP -- System Properties/Advanced/Startup and
Recovery/Settings. In XP there was also an option here to manually
edit boot.ini, and that's absent in Vista ('cause there is no
boot.ini). One therefore no longer has the option to change the
displayed name of the OS, but even that might be added before Vista
goes gold.

VistaBootPro is not a boot manager. It is a boot configuration data editor.
If you have not yet encountered Boot Configuration Data, then google it and
catch the highlights.

Control Panel, System, Adv Sys Settings, Advanced, Start-up and
Recovery(settings), System Start-up...select either Vista(Microsoft
Windows" or "Earlier Version of Windows"

I know exactly what it is. What in my response led you to believe
that I think it's a boot manager?
In Beta 2, as opposed to the immediately preceding builds, it's now
possible to edit two of the options withOUT resorting to VistaBootPro.
If you want to rename the displayed options, you still need
VistaBootPro, but you do NOT need it to do what OP wanted to do?
