Note that I have NOT tried the instructions at
this link, so I have no idea if they will really
work or not, but the claim is a way to re-set a
US Canon printer to work like European and
print directly to a CD/DVD

Knightcrawlers site is more up to date than mine. I can personaly say
the procedure works for the ip3000 and mp760. The newer models i've
not tested personaly.

Most importantly... turns out you can get the parts required from Canon
USA. While I'm sure knightcrawler has that info... not sure if it's on
his site yet. So i'll quote the info from steve's forums...

The number I called was 732-521-7679 and your part # is correct. It may
be that they sold out if they have gotten alot of orders since it was
noted in this thread that Canon USA had some in stock. The girl I
talked to this past Monday said they were in stock, took my order and
said they should be to me in 3 to 5 days. Hopefully they will come
today or Monday.

It works for the models stated.

I've done this on both an iP3000 and an iP4000 and they both work perfectly
well. I've printed about 60 discs on the iP4000 that I have at home and about
10 discs on the iP3000 that we have at work. The procedure to modify the
printer is very easy, but finding the CD tray might be a challenge. I bought
my CD tray from a UK seller on eBay.

Works on the ip6600d. I tried making the tray but it was hit and miss,
ordered one from an Ebay source, works great. Would like to find a
way of modifying the 50 odd DVD discs I already own to be able to
print on them,
somebody suggested spraying a light coat of white paint on them.

The last batch of discs I sprayed ended up unreadable but I think this
is due to overspray. The main problem i'd worry about is raising the
profile of the disc too much. While I have gotten away with trays that
were a tad too tall I can imagine head scuffing being an issue. What
comes to mind are those primers you can find in autoparts stores...
sandable white primers. But... I my self gave up on this idea, and
used my batch of 50 disks make some stuff for friends and just used a
sharpy.
