My XP Pro PC at the cottage dies all too regularly with a Stop 0x6F.

The root cause is temperature extremes - the cottage is not heated
during the week, then we arrive for the weekend and heat the place up.
The Slot-1 adapter gradually works it's way out of the slot, then the PC
crashes and corrupts system files. I could solve the problem permanently
by replacing the hardware, but that's not in my budget so I reseat the
processor and repair the file system damage - which fixes it for a month
or three.

Sometimes restoring smss.exe from the XP install CD (as per MS KB
153742) fixes the file system corruption, but more often it just changes
the Stop error to another Session3 error which has no KB references - at
which point I resort to a repair install, then wait several hours while
Windows Update re-installs 25MB of post-SP2 patches via dialup.

Anyone know which files in addition to smss.exe are required for
Session3 Initialization to complete?

Failing that, any pointers to a recipe for slipstreaming the post-SP2
patches onto my install CD?

TIA

I guess not :-(

My up to date system has 52 post-SP2 patches installed. I estimate it
would take at least a day to slipstream them all using the command line
instructions published by Microsoft.

This free software claims to do the job much faster:

http://www.nliteos.com

Anyone here used it for slipstreaming patches? Care to comment?

TIA

I'm impressed with Nlite. It took me roughly two hours to:

- Copy my XP Pro SP2 CD to HDD
- Download 52 post-SP2 patches from Microsoft
- Download and install Nlite
- Use the Nlite wizard to slipstream the patches and create an ISO
- Burn the ISO to CD
- Perform a clean install from the updated CD
- Use Windows Update to confirm the newly installed system was fully up
to date from first boot

I have not tried a repair install from the updated CD as yet, but don't
anticipate any problems.

It will only take a few minutes on Patch Tuesdays to maintain a fully
updated XP install CD using Nlite.
