Hi Irvin,
RE: "remov[ing] the [services] that are greating errors in the logs?".
Unless the program that uses the service has been uninstalled, removing the service
is not likely to be a workable solution. I recommend that you post a "New Post" (not
a "Post Reply" which tacks your message onto this very old thread), with detailed
information on the services in question and the errors you are getting.
RE: "How can I find out what services are important to Windows 2000".
Here is some information, and links to information, about Windows 2000
Services/Processes:
Windows 2000 Services Tweak guide
http://www.3dspotlight.com/tweaks/win2k_services/print.shtml
COMMENT: I highly recommend thoroughly reading this comprehensive guide before
tweaking any services. Also note the section titled "Emergency Restoration
procedure" for information on how to set service startup types using the registry
editor.
Windows 2000 Professional Services
http://www.blkviper.com/WIN2K/servicecfg.htm
COMMENT: Another very helpful site on services. Along with other information, it has
a table with "Display Name" (which equals services.msc "Name") and the corresponding
"Process Name" (which equals taskmgr.exe "Image Name").
Glossary of Windows 2000 Services
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/howitworks/management/w2kservi
ces.asp
COMMENT: Microsoft's Alphabetical list with summaries for all. Some have general
information on how each service is related to the functioning of the operating system
and describe the major effects of disabling the service.
KB263201 - Default Processes in Windows 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=263201
COMMENT: Processes, as viewed in taskmgr.exe, that run by default in Microsoft
Windows 2000.
NOTES:
1. Before reconfiguring your services, I recommend that you:
- Open services.msc > [Menu bar] Action > Export List... and save this file so that
you have a list of the installation default settings.
2. Do not change the default Startup type of the Logical Disk Manager Administrative
Service Startup Type (Manual). For more information, see the following Microsoft
Knowledge Base Article:
KB307309 - The Logical Disk Manager Administrative Service Hangs While It Is Starting
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=307309
3. Do not change the default Startup type of the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Service
(Automatic). Many services depend on it and if it fails to start (or hangs) problems
include Service Properties Sheets not displaying. For more information see the
following Microsoft Knowledge Base Article. KB259733 also describes how to use the
registry editor to configure the service to use the built-in system account.
KB259733 - How to Troubleshoot Service Startup Permissions
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=259733
4. You can use the command line program named tlist, with the -s switch, to get a
list of services running on your computer. For more information see:
Windows 2000 Help topic "To install Windows 2000 Support Tools"
KB250320 - Description of Svchost.exe
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=250320
5. On my standalone Win2000 computer, the following is a list of services that run
in SafeMode and are services that I never mess with. Of course your may be
different; check in SafeMode.
Logical Disk Manager (dmserver)
Event Log (EventLog)
Plug and Play (PlugPlay)
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) (RpcSs)
Windows Management Instrumentation (WinMgmt)
