Hi, I'm having a problem with an xp professional SP1 installation. If I
enable a firewall on my ethernet connection it gets turned off after
about 5 minutes. If I turn on automatic updates they get turned off
after the same period of time. If I make changes to the key "access
this computer from the network" under local security settings, they
disappear after a few minutes.

Can anyone tell me what's going on and how I can fix it? I've done a
nav scan with updated defs. run spybot and adaware but the symptoms
persist. I've run hijackthis and nothing looks suspect.

It sounds like a script is running on your computer that is running on a
schedule or is event based probably using secedit and/or .reg files. Malware
may have at one time installed such and it can not be detected by any
malware detection and removal program because it probably using legitimate
operating system files/services. Detecting and finding such can be very
difficult for even experienced operating system users. What you could do is
to go to Control Panel - Scheduled Tasks to see if anything unusual is found
there and delete such. It is not unusual to find entries for your anti virus
program there however. Most likely however the best solution will be to
backup all your data including your user profile under documents and
settings, any configuration info for mail/news accounts and tcp/ip settings
and do a clean install of the operating system that formats the "system"
drive. If you do such make sure you decrypt any files you have encrypted via
EFS first. First however try booting into Safe Mode with networking to see
if that makes a difference. If it does you have some service/program that
starts at computer startup or user logon that is causing the mayhem and you
may be able to track it down with msconfig by doing selective startup. If
you are using cable/DSL I STRONGLY recommend that you also use an "internet
router" to also protect your network and they are extremely affordable. ---
