The machine runs fine with a single 512 meg dimm or 2 256
meg dimms. When I exceed the 512, I get a bunch of
services that fail and when (after about 5 minutes) I am
able to log in, I get a blank screen. I can start
taskmanager but am unable to start the explorer task. I
get no error at any time just a very DUMB computer.

It's got an Asus A7V266-E mainboard and I'm using the
promise raid controller with 2 Western Digital 40 gig IDE
drives, an ATI radeon video card, an Intel desktop pro
ethernet adapter.

The MB sees the ram and the system all seems to begin
starting OK. It's not until the services start to load
that I run into the problems. Any ideas?

Read your motherboard book or visit Asus support and see if they need to be
installed in a particular configuration or if it needs single bank or double
bank or if they can be mixed, etc. Or it could be a bad memory module.
