Hi Paul,
Can you email me the exact error message that you are getting?
Is the error that you are getting below:
The Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) service depends on the following
nonexistent service: IISADMIN
If yes, we will need to reinstall IIS:
Here are the steps we should take to ensure that IIS is reinstalled cleanly.
Please follow these steps exactly, and if you have any questions along the
way,
don't hesitate to contact me.
1) In Add/Remove Windows Components, uncheck Internet Information
Services. Click Next until the reconfiguration is complete.
2) Reboot the server.
3) After the reboot, IIS should be completely uninstalled. However,
we're going to make sure the following items are deleted:
The IUSR_machinename local user account.
The IWAM_machinename local user account.
The files and folders within the ..\WinNT\System32\Inetsrv directory.
Remember, there will be 2 or 3 .dll files that cannot be deleted from within
the root of the
Inetsrv directory, but everything else should already be gone or should be
able to be deleted manually
4) To make things a bit clearer once we reinstall, let's rename the
existing iis5.log file and move it to a safe location. That way, when IIS
is getting
reinstalled, a new (and therefore empty) iis5.log file will be created. The
iis5.log file is located in the ..\WinNT directory.
5) At this point, we should be set to reinstall IIS. To do this, run
the Add/Remove Windows Components Wizard, and make sure you check the IIS
checkbox.
NOTE: I'm not sure what components of IIS you require on this server, but a
good rule of thumb is to only install the components you will be using.
This will
increase the security level of your IIS Web Server. For example, if you
will not be using FTP, we should not install the FTP Service. To modify the
actual
components of IIS that get installed, click the Details button when Internet
Information Services is highlighted.
The minimum components needed for a default installation of IIS are: Common
Files, Internet Information Services Snap-In, and World Wide Web Server. I
also recommend installing the Documentation, for access to the Help Files,
etc.
6) Once the Wizard is complete, reboot the server. Hopefully we didn'
t get any error messages!
7) After the reboot, IIS should now be installed. We can verify this
in the following ways:
- In the Services Control Panel, IIS Admin Service and World Wide Web
Publishing Service are present, and started.
- The IIS Services Manager is present. This is at
StartàProgramsàAdministrative ToolsàInternet Services Manager.
8) If there were any errors during the installation, please capture
screenshots of them. If the installation appeared successful but either of
the
above two points in Step 7 are missing, I will need to have a look at the
iis5.log file (in ..\WinNT) and the System and Application event logs from
the server.
PS. If this is not your error message, please email me your exact error
message.
Thanks, Paul.
Diana.
