Can anyone tell me how long it should take to download
this service pack from the web or disc, and whether or
not it is worth installing?

The download time can vary depending on your internet connection.
Many hours for dialup down to 20 minutes or less on DSL.

Can't remember how long the download took (wasn't long via
cable) but it doesn't matter because you should do it no
matter how long it takes. You should check for Windows
upgrades regularly just as you should check for updates to
your virus protection weekly. Speaking of virus
protection - I note that Norton issued an update today.
