I cannot get sp3 to install on my system.
I have tryed at least 10 times, the last two with firewall and spyware
disabled.
I keep getting the message "access denied ,setup error, sp3 did not
complete, error#0x8DD0007".
Can anyone offer any assistance to this problem?

If I where to install SP3 I would choose to download the
file and not use Automatic Updates. (See below)

Your PC must be at least SP1 or SP2 level as SP3 will not
install on XP Gold.

I would also create an "Image Backup" of my drive prior
to installing SP3 just in case you do have problems.
Don't have any Image Backup software:
Try "True Image" (has a 15 day trial version available)
http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/

If you use Zone Alarm Firewall (Free or Paid) then update to
version 7.0.483.
Warning do not install ZA version 8.0.xxx as it currently has
problems.

To install Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), either Windows XP Service
Pack 1a (SP1a) or Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) must already be
installed

This has already been discussed, Gerry. Note that the requirement is SP1
in the following TechNet link:

http://technet.microsoft.com:80/en-us/library/cc507836.aspx

The differences between SP1 and SP1a are *very* minor. See this link:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;813926

I am not aware of any documented instances where SP1 as a base won't
work whereas the slightly different SP1a would work. It seems to be a
legalistic issue (because of Java) more than anything else.

Yes I do recollect the discussion. The PITA seems to have found other

Yep, it's a bad habit of mine of just
referring to Service Pack 1a as SP1.

I'm not so sure that Gerry is right in this case. Essentially SP1a is
just a replacement for SP1, for legal reasons, and the two are
identical except that "Windows XP SP1a does not include or install the
Microsoft VM, which provides support for running Java programs."

It's hard to imagine that SP1a would work for this and SP1 would not,
and my guess is that Microsoft says SP1a, because, as far as it's
concerned, there is an SP1a, and no SP1.

But I don't know that for sure, and I'd be interested to hear from
someone who tried to install SP3 on a machine with SP1 (not SP1a) on
it. If you tried it, what where the results?

J

JS

I'd be more than happy to test installing SP3
on a SP1 based PC but I don't have SP1
(at least not on my hard drive), there is a
chance I may have it backup up to a CD or DVD
but I'll have to check my archive. I doubt it's still
available as a download

You have overlooked an important point. It is not me making the
statement. It is Microsoft!

Read the Source: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389

You are in a better position to tell Microsoft they are wrong than I!

Ken:
I believe your assumption is probably correct insofar as the MS stance on
this issue.

I've personally installed or have been involved with dozens of installations
of SP3 on SP1 machines and I've never encountered a single instance or been
made aware of any problem that could be attributed to an SP3 > SP1
installation.

Yes, but then MS makes this statement:
Differences Between Windows XP SP1 and Windows XP SP1a:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/813926/

"There is no benefit to installing SP1a if you are already running Windows
XP SP1. Microsoft does not recommend that you install SP1a if you are
already running SP1."

"Windows XP SP1a is the same as Windows XP SP1 except that the Microsoft
virtual machine (VM) is removed in SP1a."

So if there are as they say "no benefit" SP1 should work as well as SP1a
unless they know something we don't.
Anyway if I can find my SP1 file, I'll configure my "test pc" and see what
happens

The argument becomes academic if you install SP2, check all is OK and
then install SP3. You simplify / reduce the issues that can
potentionally cause an update to fail.

Gerry:
Admittedly no problem would presumably arise should the user decide to first
install SP2 over SP1 and then install SP3. But what would be the point of
all this if one can simply install SP3 over an XP-SP1 installation without
any problem? Of the few dozen such installation of SP3 > SP1 that I'm aware
of there have been no reports of any problems doing so which were
attributable to that process.
