Service Pack 1 is update that was released months ago.
Is this a brand new computer? When did you get it?

Do a search in C:\Windows\System32 for a directory called catroot2 and
rename it to catrootold (or delete it) then try the Windows Update again.

This is not a new computer but i had to reinstall the xp
from my recovery cd, which came with the computer.

try downloading it from Winows Update catalog instead, and then installing
it when disconnected from the Internet.

The newest is SP1a (without the Java Virtual Machine). Try that one from the
Windows Catalog site as recommended in another reply.
