I use windows XP on an amd 1.1 gig system, with required
memory, and want to know WHY whenever I install a service
pack , or any update, for that matter, my CPU usage
immrdiately is at 40-50 %+. I have never gotten a service
pack installed that didn't immediately make my cpu
icrease its potential for burn-out.
OK, Mr. Gates...is there spyware or hidden stuff in the
service packss, or has XP FINALLY going to make me want
to switch to LINUX???????
Oh , and $35 for the ability to talk to support personnel
online...gimme a break. Am I the only one who thinks that
a product should be backed by support people?
I am gonna have to go back to 98.

You can go back to Windows 98 if you wish, however support is
nonexistant there as well unless you wantt to pay for it.
If your Windows XP is retail, you have 2 free support incidents.
If Windows XP is OEM, contact the seller for support, that is why you
paid the OEM.

Most patches do not cause the issues you describe.
However if patches are installed without disabling unnecessary
applications such as anti virus etc, this may be one of the possible
causes.

Run an updated virus scan.
Or Scan for Viruses online:

Run Disk Cleanup checking all boxes except "Compress old files"
(Windows XP)
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Clean-up
Run Defrag.
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Defragmenter
If you have file sharing software such as Kazaa, disable it.
Check this link:

Run Ad-Aware (free version) or Spybot to check for spyware:

Or

This may apply if you recently installed Windows XP Service Pack 1:
