Subject: RE: Win XP Installation and Service Pack Issue

Well Tom,

For let me start by thankig you since your instructions
worked to resolve most of the issues. One problem I still
noticed is that when I try to perform the automatic
windows update, it states "there are no current updates
available", eventhough this machine is clearly missing
service pack 1, among additional fixes. Any suggestion on
this remaining issue.

Thanks again,
Eddy

PS. Eventhough I installed the drivers for this
particular machine from DELL cd's the USB's are still not
working.

Dear Eddy,

I suggest you format the C drive and reinstall Windows XP by the following
steps:

Note: After you format the C drive, all the data on C drive will be lost.
Please make sure you have done the backup for all your important files
before installing Windows XP in this method and read the instructions on
the screen carefully.

1) Make sure you have set your CD-ROM as the first priority boot device.
You may refer to your computer manual for information on how to do this.

2) Insert the Windows XP CD into your CD-ROM and reboot your computer.

3) When you see "Press any key to boot from CD¡" on the screen, press a
key to let your computer boot from the Windows XP CD.

4) When the computer boots from the CD-ROM, it check your hardware and then
prompt you the following options.

* To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER
* To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.
* To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

Please press ENTER.

5) Press the F8 key to agree the Licensing Agreement.

6) You will see your current Windows XP installation is listed in a box and
get the following options:

* To repair the selected Windows XP installation, press R.
* To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing,
press ESC.

Please press "ESC".

7) Now you will see the following options:

* To set up Windows XP on the selected item, press ENTER.
* To create a partition in the unpartitioned space, press C.
* To delete the selected partition, press D.

Please select the drive C partition and press D to delete it.

5) After you delete the drive C partition, you can highlight the
"Unpartitioned space" and press C to create a new partition.

6) Select new partition you just created and press Enter. You will be
prompted to format the newly created partition.

7) Follow on-screen instructions to install Windows XP.

If the problem still exists, you can post the system information file and
let me have a check.

a. Click Start, Run, type "msinfo32.exe" and press Enter.
b. Click the File menu, then click Save. Specify a file name and save the
.nfo file.

Dear Eddy,

I suggest you check if the system date is set correctly in your Windows XP
machine.

If the problem still exists, please post the Windows Update.log file, which
is in the C:\Windows directory.

Hey Tom,

Thanks for your continued help.
The computer is connected to a Win 2K Server, and the
interenet connection is shared, there no issues with
other XP PC's doing this. And the language is set to
English(United States).

The problem still lies in that even though the C: (only
drive in this box) was completely re-formatted per a
previous post, and reinstalled the XP Pro after that. The
previous installation had Service pack 1 but the current
does not. And the windows update does not have any,
eventhough there are quite a few security holes left
unpatched.

Please advice,

Sincerely,

Eddy

Tom,

Issue resolved! Thanks for all your great help throughout
the last week. After reading the article you suggested it
hit me to the cause. Eventhough the internet connection
was working properly and I could browse the web, under
Internet options, LAN connections I had not set up the
connection to go thru the ISA Server and the port. In
either case this solved the problem and now I had over 60
updates. I have many of them on CD and installers but I
wanted to make sure everything was fine before moving
forward with this machine. Thank you again.

Sincerely,

Eddy

PS. The web is normally not accessible unless the
mentioned portion is configured, so that was out of norm.
