as you know windows XP has 2 service packs by now. I
installed them both through windows update (express way).
But i have to reinstall windows now and i was wondering, i
heard that service packs can be installed during windows
installation. Is this better? And, do i have to install
them both or just the second one? doesnt the 2nd one have
everything the 1st one had? thanks

Actually, there has only been 1 service pack released for Windows XP at this
moment.

Dennis,

The second Service Pack for Windows XP has not been publicly released yet.
Mike:

I have an MSDN subscription at my University...any idea how I go about
getting Sp2? It would be nice to have a slipstream image in place
before the semester starts. I would hate to have do patch these
machines later.

Yes a service pack can be applied during installation by actually patching
the media to pre-include all of the files. A process known as
slipstreaming.

Also, I have the July 2003 XP pro with Service Pack 1a CD (number
1847.1). Can I use this to create a base XP CD image and build a new
XP images from it? More importantly, will it work with RIS?

Thanks,

Jeff

JW,

Yes - you wait for us to FINISH IT and then release it.
see
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle/desktop/consumer/servicepacks.mspx
for the estimated release date.

Maybe I was not clear in my initial response - There is NO Service Pack 2
for Windows XP that has been released publicly.
If you see hotfixes labelled as SP2 that only denotes that they are
candidates for inclusion on SP2 and are releases post SP1.
