Service pack 3 for XP

Everyday my auto update tells me there's an important update for my comp.
Then it tells me that I need to download SP3. But when I try to install it
stops and says Error , close all progams and try again... ???

Some of the hints that were passed around a year ago were to not use the
auto updates to install SP3. Also turn off AV software and disconnect
from the internet while doing the update (the latter I'm not sure about
and never did it.) Down load the update and install it manually.
